Don't Believe the Network Anchors……They Have Jobs
I've heard a friend of mine espouse on the subject of
the economy and unemployment at the local pub a few times
recently. The argument he's been making didn't score with
me at first. But the more I think about it and the more
I see on a day-to-day basis, the more I am embracing his
idea.
He believes that the United States is not just currently
in a serious recession. He argues that we are indeed in
a Great Depression-the likes of which is every bit as
bad as 1929-30's. His entire theory is based on one point;
if it were not for unemployment benefits, the nation would
be in the same dire straits (or worse) than 1930.
My friend fully understands that the economy is based
(and influenced) by dozens---if not hundreds-----of tentacles.
Everything from our oil consumption right down to the
tiny little governments and revolutions that we never
hear about. Everything from the housing market to the
illegal aliens to bad weather.
But his main point is that if not for hundreds of thousands
of out-of-work people receiving unemployment bennies,
we would be in the same soup lines and tent cities that
were so abundant in the '30s. As a member of the cvworkersunited.com
army, and an out-of-work person, I can now see where he
is coming from. I would have been in the soup lines and
sleeping in the cab of my truck for many months now if
not for unemployment benefits. Literally.
This is a form of aid that came out of the first Great
Depression. Through the Social Security Act of 1935, the
federal government of the United States effectively coerced
the individual states into adopting unemployment insurance
plans. And thank goodness they did.
Think of all of the friends, family, and acquaintances
you have that are unemployed. I've been out of work for
8 full months. My two roommates are both in-between jobs.
Ironically, after we call for our unemployment benefits,
we all get our confirmation/certification letters in the
mail the same day. It's one, single household and every
member living there gets their unemployment letter the
same day ! As I mentioned though, without these benefits,
all three of us would be living in our vehicles. And we
are not sitting back with our hands out, either.
I've applied to over 400 places in the eight months I've
been off. I follow up on all my inquiries. I have received
perhaps 25 replies. That's a response rate of 6.25%. These
are places looking to fill a position and they are inundated
with so many resumes and responses that virtually no firm
replies to all candidates anymore. Not even a form letter.
That's what I've been told verbatim by many of the places
I've applied.
They say the national unemployment is between 9-9.5% lately.
And only some outlets acknowledge that the figure is naturally
low due to the missing element of people that have graduated
off of unemployment benefits. Or those too proud to take
the benefits and are currently living off of their savings.
Newscasters try to tell us how there are signs of improvement.
Sure, they have a job to go to everyday and make nice
incomes. And the legislators and other blind mice in Washington
desperately try to convince the American public that things
are slowly getting back on track.
I'm not buying it at all. You think about it. If you are
out of work and receiving unemployment benefits, where
would you be without them from Day 1? Where would your
unemployed friends be if they never received a penny of
benefits? In today's United States, consisting of millions
of additional people as compared to 1930, a 10% unemployment
rate is a Great Depression. Without the bi-weekly check
from the government, how many more tens of thousands of
homes would have been foreclosed? It would be catastrophe!
Wait a minute, the foreclosure situation even WITH unemployment
benefits is a catastrophe. Thousands of people would be
in the streets of every city.
Don't believe a word they are trying to sell us on the
evening news. This country is knee-deep in another Great
Depression. My friend is aware of it. And he made me aware
of it. Now you are too.
